In a world full of mechanically operated parts in various industries, something to consider when it comes to maintenance and tune ups – “The Law of Moving Parts” that states, that moving parts will wear out…and like Murphy’s law, will wear out at the worst possible moment, leaving you in the cold without heat. No one wants to be without heat in the dead of winter or even in the milder cooler temperatures. Heat is a basic need for survival and heating units are a great luxury we often oversee and down play on importance. It’s important to have your heating unit maintained on a regular basis.

The obvious benefits to heating tune-ups include safety, saving money on utilities, and sleeping comfortably.

1. Inspect, test and calibrate controls and safety mechanisms

Safety controls are designed to shut down equipment when unsafe conditions are detected to prevent fires, gas leaks and other dangerous situations as well as to protect the equipment from catastrophic failure. Testing and calibrating these controls ensure safe operation of your equipment.

2. Lubricate motors and bearings

Lubrication prevents friction in motors which can increase electricity usage and cause equipment damage.

3. Measure amperage and voltage of blower

Improper voltage and amp draw increase operating costs and can shorten the life of the system components.

4. Measure and record temperatures and system performance factors

An accurate record of vital data can indicate potential problems and help prevent equipment breakdown.

5. Check and adjust fan switch, pilot and pilot assembly

Ensures that the system starts, operates, and shuts off properly.

11. Check & clean air filter/replace at customer's option* 

A clogged filter reduces airflow, which can cause a breakdown. It can also result in dirt and other filtered residue cycling back into your home.

12. Conduct overall system assessment

This includes items such as general system configuration and ductwork/heating pipes to check for wear, damage, improper installation and other potential issues.

13. Review findings, make recommendations and discuss any concerns 

It's important that you understand the condition of your heating and cooling equipment including items that may pose either immediate or future risks. You should also understand your options regarding home comfort, energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

Your furnace is a crucial part to the overall heating experience.Occasionally equipment has unknown kinks at the time of manufacturing that can be dangerous to consumers. Over the last decade, certain furnaces have been recalled due to faulty parts including issues in design, error in modification, or improper installation. Industry changes occur constantly, from tweaks, recalls, and new product manufacturing. Research shows that consolidated furnaces that were produced between 1983 and 1994 (11-year span) by Consolidated Industries (now bankrupt) should no longer be used. Consolidated Industries manufactured the machine under numerous name brands such as Amana, Coleman, Kenmore, Premier, Sears, and Trane.

Well known and trusted name brands can too have defects. With over 30-years since the manufacture date, are you wondering why no one told you about this? The official issue with the consolidated furnace is a faulty steel control rod. The information should have been disclosed to the public much sooner than now. Whether this delay is from manufacturer having their hands tied legally or if the law needs to be changed in general, is unknown but issue stands that for decades you may have been at risk. If you still have the product in your home, we strongly advise an immediate call to Expert Air today for a replacement of a different type of product. 

Defective Furnace Could Lead to Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
